Our AMAZING Keynote Speakers:

Catharina Laporte is currently an Instructional Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Texas A&M University. Having returned to school as a non-traditional student after a successful international career as Information Technology Manager for the world’s largest oil and gas drilling contractor, Catharina was awarded a PhD in Cultural Anthropology the year she turned 50. As an Australian-born, cultural anthropologist with extensive managerial and international experience in both the real world and multinational corporations, Catharina also has a passion for quality education and a pragmatic theoretical perspective. In addition to her role as Director for Undergraduate Studies, serving on the Texas A&M Faculty Senate Executive Committee, and various university-wide first year first-generation student initiatives, Catharina is currently interested in how applied anthropology combined with an appreciation for diversity, can illuminate different perspectives on real-world phenomenon, projects and problems.

Katy Franco is a bilingual comedienne and actress who has worked in the USA, Venezuela, Argentina and Puerto Rico. Her credits include theater, television, Latin soap operas, film and sitcoms. As a stand-up comic, she has performed in Hollywood’s most famous nightclubs, including the Laugh Factory, Comedy Store, Improv and Ice House. In Puerto Rico, she is a well recognized celebrity because of her acting roles on stage and TV, stand-up comedy, her book Chemorella, and her tireless work as a breast cancer awareness advocate.Katy is a 14-year breast cancer survivor. She turned her experiences into a bilingual book entitled Chemorella, the most meaningful “Cinderella story” ever told, coauthored with husband Ken Phillips. When she speaks, Katy weaves stand-up comedy, stories from her life, and laughter therapy exercises into an energetic, hysterically funny presentation. Her skill in creating a powerful message from these disparate elements caused Women’s Health national magazine to name her “the Cause Comedienne.” Katy has delivered her energizing, motivational speeches at corporate events, municipal events, women’s forums, hospitals, middle and high schools, universities, and government entities. Her audiences have ranged in size from 50 to 1,500 people.

Our ABWA Panel will include: Vicki Proctor Marlett, Melanie Brown, Jan Finley Fernandez, and Kathryn Knotts.
